Taupo-nui-a-Tia Action Plan
Taupo District Council voted last week not to renew its financial support of the 2020 TaupÃ…Â-nui-ÄÂ-Tia Project, subject to public feedback on the matter.
For the last three years, the Council has provided up to $50,000 annually, which was matched dollar for dollar by Environment Waikato. However, the Council felt that, although it supports the project’s vision, a commitment to a financial contribution should be discontinued.
The 2020 TaupÃ…Â-nui-ÄÂ-Tia Project provides an opportunity for participating organisations to take a collaborative approach to the sustainable management of Lake Taupo. The project is also supported by the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board, Department of Conservation and the Department of Internal Affairs, although these agencies do not provide financial contributions.
The funding covered costs such as contracting a project coordinator, conducting research and carrying out project work.
The decision to discontinue funding is subject to public consultation on the draft annual plan. The Council encourages public feedback on the matter during the forthcoming consultation process from 17 March to 21 April.
