Taupo Mayor Rick Cooper received glowing praise at a recent Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) meeting in Cambridge.

LGNZ President Basil Morrison, whose involvement in local government spans more than 37 years, praised Mayor Cooper’s recent performance, particularly in response to the murder of Scottish tourist Karen Aim.

In front of many mayors, councillors and chief executives present from the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and East Cape Regions, Mr Morrison said, "My compliments to Taupo Mayor Rick Cooper. As a new mayor, he was thrust into the national and international media spotlight over the recent murder of Karen Aim. I am very proud of how he showed real leadership in his handling of that local tragedy."

Mayor Cooper, who was unable to attend the meeting, says he is flattered by the praise although regrets the context in which it was earned. “I certainly hope I don’t have to shine in Mr Morrison’s eyes again via another tragic incident,” he says.
