It was a largely disappointing day for New Zealand at the ITU World Cup Triathlon in South Africa overnight with James Elvery the best of the Kiwis in 20th place.

Terrenzo Bozzone went one better than his 22nd place at last weekend’s Lisbon race and will once again be all the stronger for another race under his belt on return from injury but the Kiwi’s were unable to stay with the pace on the run after the bulk of the field finished the 40km bike leg in contact.

Clark Ellice stayed close to his team mates, finishing in 24th place.

Crowd favourite Hendrik DeVilliers of South Africa ran away from a strong field to win his country’s first-ever world cup gold today on home soil at the 2007 Richards Bay BG Triathlon World Cup.

DeVilliers came from behind off the bike to catch the lead group of athletes with support from thousands of elated South Africa fans.

Over the final 500 metres DeVilliers pulled away from veteran Volodymyr Polikarpenko of the Ukraine to cross the line five seconds ahead.

Rounding out the top three was the young Alexander Brukhankov of Russia, a further two seconds back.

Meanwhile in the women’s race current Junior world champion Kirsten Sweetland of Canada has won for the first time.

The 18-year old Canadian’s time of 2 hours 3 minutes and 32 seconds was 15 seconds better then her closest rival, 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, Magali Di marco Messmer of Switzerland.

Di marco Messmer was able to hold off a charging Christiane Pilz of Germany at the line for the silver medal.

Pilz rounded out the podium in third, with another strong run, only two seconds down.
