One of the largest trees in Whakatane is dead and plans are underway to have the tree removed for public safety reasons by the middle of next month.

The Council’s Service Delivery Officer, Peter McLaren says a tender has been accepted to remove the giant eucalyptus tree at Warren Park. The massive tree is the last of a line of gum trees that was planted along Eivers Road in about 1900.

The tree died in January this year, due to water uptake problems. Branches of the tree had to be removed early last year when they began showing sign of poor health. At the time it was found that the tree had a fungal infection but arborist had hoped it would recover.

Mr. McLaren says results of an assessment by arborists show that the tree is dead, but will remain stable for several months. This has allowed us the opportunity follow normal tender process to obtain the best price for the job.

“The death of the tree is a real loss to our town’s landscape. However, our main priority is now public safety. Removing the tree without damaging property and infrastructure in the area is of vital importance. We have taken expert advice and will work to get the best deal without compromising safety”.

The tree is expected to be taken down over several days and there will be some disruption to vehicle and pedestrian traffic while arborists dismantle the tree in sections.
