New Zealand Mountain Safety Council Executive Director Darryl Carpenter extends his deep sympathy and concern for those affected by the canyoning incident in the Mangatepopo Gorge yesterday.

“We are extremely shocked and saddened by the tragedy. Our thoughts are with the parents, families, friends and the Elim Christian College community, as well as the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre staff and those involved in the rescue operation.

“The Mountain Safety Council is committed to facilitating, enabling and supporting safe and active participation in the New Zealand outdoors through education in outdoor safety.”

“Those leading outdoor recreation activities take their responsibilities extremely seriously and have a particular focus on safety precautions, training and risk management to ensure an outdoor activity is both enjoyable and safe”.

“This event is a tragedy given the significant positive contribution that outdoor recreation makes to challenge and extend those who are active in the outdoors, “ he said.

“Now is the time to give our support to those affected. In due course there will be a time for review and analysis of what occurred in this incident. The Mountain Safety Council is committed to ensuring the lessons learned are well understood and any recommendations incorporated in ongoing outdoor safety education for those providing an experience as well as those participating in an activity,” said Mr Carpenter.
