The mammoth task of removing 53,000 cubic metres of earth from the bund at Nelson Park will begin on
Monday 21 April.

The bund, along with a grandstand and athletics track, is being cleared as part of the conditions of sale to
the Charter Hall Group who plan to build a large format retail park at the Karamu Rd site.

Mark Kinvig, who is project managing the site clearance, said the works will take about 10 weeks to
complete.

“This job is significant due to the volume of earth to be moved. The majority of the earth will be relocated to
Roy’s Hill where it will be used to cap-off the redundant Council landfill to satisfy Hawke’s Bay Regional
Council consent requirements,” said Mr Kinvig.

The $1.45 million contract has been awarded to a joint venture between Walmsley Contracting Ltd and
Infracon Ltd.

Demolition of the grandstand will begin once building consent is issued. It is estimated this will be in June.
