The North Otago Museum Archive celebrated its twentieth birthday last year. Throughout those twenty years the archive staff and volunteers have helped thousands of people searching for information about family, friends, houses as well as general Oamaru and North Otago history. The facility itself has expanded in both collection size and service but the fittings and fixtures have remained circa 1987.

“The place is very tired, the carpet threadbare and the staff have no office space,” commented Museum Director, Rowan Carroll, “It is time both staff and customers had comfortable facilities.”

Work to build the new staff offices and research space will begin on Wednesday 30 April and at this stage it is expected to take three weeks. Staff will still be on duty and will be able to help with enquiries by phone 03 433 0852, or email museum@waitaki.govt.nz.

“We look forward to opening a more user friendly archive on 21 May,” said Miss Carroll.
