A THEME ride that could be known as the “McKelvie Tower of Terror” or “The McKelvie Long Drop” has been mooted for the proposed Leisureville Centre development in Feilding.

The suggestion is contained in a submission from Feilding resident Philip Spring on the Manawatu District Council’s Draft Annual Plan 2008/09, which is now open for public consultation.

Mr Spring said many great ideas had been put forward for the proposed complex on land near the Makino Aquatic Centre and Feilding Public Library but a “WOW” factor to encourage sponsors, trusts and the community was needed.

He said the theme ride, known to be one of the most popular and scariest of activities, would attract national and international interest if it was built as one of the tallest drops of its kind in the world or the southern hemisphere.

It was also a compact theme ride and required only a small area to operate.

Mr Spring said the ride would be easily marketable, complement other attractions, provide a revenue stream and draw people to the CBD.

The Leisureville proposal has drawn a number of submissions, including support for the permanent siting of the Feilding and District Art Centre near the library and a large playground similar to the one in Masterton.

Ten submissions on the Draft Annual Plan have so far been received, with the public consultation period running until Tuesday, May 13.

Other topics raised by submitters include a new roof for the Feilding Civic Centre’s Concert Chamber, the establishment of a recreational youth centre and an upgrade of the community playground at Longburn School.
