If you speed past a school this term everyone around you is going to know about it. New Zealand Steel has offered their portable speed trailer to Franklin District Council who, together with the local Police, will be locating it around the District over the next few weeks. The sign will be focused on roads near schools and speeding hot spots.

“With the school term starting again we want to remind people that speeding is extremely dangerous, especially when children are around,” says Franklin District Council’s Road Safety Co-ordinator, Monique Haines.

During some recent speed monitoring, requested by Council on East Street, the average speed was over 60kph, well about the legal limit and potentially deadly.

The speed trailer works by flashing your current speed up on a large screen as you drive towards it so everyone around you will know exactly how fast you are going. If you are travelling over 50kph it will also flash at you to “Slow Down.”

The trailer was placed on the side of East Street, Pukekohe, on Thursday and cars were seen instantly responding as their speed flashed out for all to see.

“The brake lights would come on as soon as they saw they were travelling too fast,” says Monique.

With schools heading back next week Franklin District Council believes this is a perfect time to get the speed trailer out there. Local Police will also be targeting their enforcement around schools.

“We are really grateful to New Zealand Steel for letting the community use this sign,” says Monique.
