Chris Swney, Taupo Youth Council Chairman has been nominated by Taupo District Council for the Celebrating Everyday Young New Zealanders Awards.

The Celebrating Everyday Young New Zealanders Awards is to provide national recognition of the positive contribution made by everyday young New Zealanders and to increase the profile of Youth Week 08, which is being held at the end of May.

Community Support Project Officer, Jenny Steadman works with the Taupo Youth Council and put Mr Swney forward for the award. “Chris makes a really positive impact in our community. He raises issues and shares his views about what is important to a young person and maintains a positive focus in his role as Chairperson of the Taupo Youth Council.”

“These awards are a great initiative as they promote the positive things young people do for our community and encourage our youth to present their talents, share ideas and focus on the positive aspects of being young,” she said.

The Minister of Youth Affairs, Nanaia Mahuta, will be hosting a special event in the Grand Hall, Parliament Buildings on the evening of Wednesday 28 May from 4.00-8.00pm celebrating the positive achievements of 12 young people.

Youth Week 08 is being held from 26 May – 1 June and this year the focus is on supportive relationships with young people. Each year, events are organised by young people and the youth sector all over New Zealand that encourage young people to get involved, have a say, influence opinions, showcase their creativity and talent, share ideas, access information and have fun.

During this year’s Youth Week, the Taupo Youth Council in conjunction with the Youth Café for Health ‘Extreme’ team, is holding a Youth Concert called ‘DO IT TO IT’. The groups have managed to secure national band SPACIFIX for the night with popular local band Mingoss and other local school bands in support. This is a teenage only concert restricted to 12 - 18 year olds and is an opportunity for youth to interact with their peers in a safe and fun environment.
