Sony New Zealand is proud to announce its plans to sponsor 19-year-old world champion BMX athlete Sarah Walker.

Peter Buckton, corporate and marketing communications manager for Sony New Zealand, says the company is delighted to support the BMX rider.

“She is a hugely talented athlete who not only utilises technology to improve her on-track performance, but to also keep in touch with friends, family and fans around the world,” he says

Currently ranked number one in both the Oceania and World UCI rounds, Auckland-based Walker is thrilled Sony New Zealand has come onboard as one of her sponsors.

“They are such a good match for what I am doing. It’s awesome and exciting that they are going to support me,” she says.

“People might not realise, but technology plays a huge part in my everyday training.”

Although the Olympic Games are Walker’s main focus for 2008, the Auckland-based teenager is determined to perform on the world stage at upcoming international events prior to landing in Beijing in August.

Walker will travel to Australia and Switzerland to race in Supercross events before competing at the 2008 UCI BMX World Championships in China at the end of May.

She is determined to make her Olympic debut memorable.

“It's always been a dream of mine to go to the Olympic Games, and up until 2003 I was willing to change sports to do so. When it was announced in 2004 that BMX would debut at the 2008 games, there was no turning back,” she says.

“I never dreamed that my hobby would take me all over the world, yet alone fulfil my dream of going to the Olympics.”
