Proposed redevelopment of Len Harlen Park

People living and working in Flaxmere are being encouraged to share their thoughts on a proposal to improve the layout and landscaping of Len Harlen Park, situated between Flaxmere Avenue and Peary Crescent.

Members of the Flaxmere community have raised concerns about the safety of Len Harlen Park, particularly at night. A study undertaken by Opus International Consultants has recommended creating a link road between Peary Crescent and Flaxmere Avenue, which would result in the reduction in the size of the Park, and the creation of new houses on the balance of the land. This would increase the surveillance of the Park, while still retaining a significant size neighbourhood park for the local community.

Henare O’Keefe, Hastings District Councillor for the Flaxmere Ward, said it was a proposal which had many positive outcomes for the Flaxmere community.

“This plan will move Flaxmere forward and help alleviate some of the challenges we face as a community,” said Mr O’Keefe.

“We have inherited the effects of bad town-planning along time in the past. There is no connectivity in this particular corner of Flaxmere and this work will help to open up the area. We’re overdue a makeover and this is the beginning of it. It’s a tremendous thing for our Flaxmere people,” Mr O’Keefe said.

A proposed concept plan has been prepared, which shows the location of the new link road, the relocation of the play equipment, landscaping and amenity features, and the proposed new residential house sites.
The community is now being offered the chance to view the plans and make formal submissions.
