The Oamaru Opera House is to hold a volunteer launch next Tuesday as part of Volunteer Awareness Week, which runs from 15-21 June.

New Zealanders contribute 270 million hours of formal, unpaid work for non-profit organisations annually, equal to 133,799 full time positions. The time given has been valued at almost $3.31 billion. This contribution is recognised day to day by volunteering organisations and celebrated each year with Volunteers Awareness Week.

Like other arts organisations, the Oamaru Opera House will rely on volunteers to contribute to the delivery of excellent service at the venue. Oamaru Opera House Director Richard McWha will host an information evening on Tuesday 17 June at the Kingsgate Hotel Brydone at 7:30pm to launch the Opera House volunteers programme. This will be an opportunity for the community to come along and find out more about what it means to be a volunteer.

Mr McWha said there are many skilled people in the community that the Oamaru Opera House is keen to involve, and noted that there are many forms of volunteering that range from having regular assigned responsibilities, through to registering a particular skill that can be called upon when the need arises.

“There is no typical volunteer. Everyone from youths to retirees, through to professionals who are able to offer intermittent services, are welcome. Volunteering is about giving but also is an opportunity for socialising, networking, enjoyment, training opportunities and up skilling,” he said.

The Oamaru Opera House is committed to utilising and valuing volunteers alongside staff as members of the Opera House team and endorses the Volunteering New Zealand Code of practice.
