Manukau youth get rewarded for reading

Manukau Libraries’ annual teen reading programme Manix2 makes a welcome return this week.

The programme rewards youth for reading books of their own choice and points are rewarded for every book read. At the end of the programme, these points will be used in a giant prize draw. Up for grabs are mobile phones, GoGear MP3 players, Sony headphones and much more.

Teens also get a second chance to win at their local library. Prizes include graphic novels, hoodies and movie tickets.

This year teens taking part in the programme are being given an added bonus. The points they earn can also be used to pay off their fines.

Manix project co-ordinator Jody Gayton says they decided to double the rewards on offer this year to encourage young people to find books they enjoy reading as well as giving cash-strapped teens the opportunity to ‘read off’ their fines.

“Manukau Libraries have heaps of resources for young people. Manix is a great way to encourage them to use them,” says Jody.

The Manix reading challenge is open to all youth aged 12 to 18 and ends on 1 August. Teens can join Manukau Libraries for six weeks of fast and furious reading, internet use, free stuff and celebration events by registering online at www.manukau-libraries.govt.nz or at their local library until 21 July.
