“Our goal is to have 70% of the Whakatane District population as library members” says Whakatane District Library Services Coordinator Carol Spanhake.

The new challenge follows the Council’s decision as part of the Annual Plan process to remove the annual library service fee.

A delighted Mrs Spanhake says the removal of the $5 annual fee couldn’t have come at better time for the library as it coincides with the launch of a new service “Top Titles”. And to add to the good news, the Library is offering new members an opportunity to go into a draw this month to win 20 Top Title or magazine rental vouchers. Winners will be announced on Friday 1 August 2008.

“We have created a special area for the latest and most popular novels for easy access by readers. Ordinarily users would have had to rummage through the shelves to find the new titles. We hope more people will now join the library and make use of the range of services that we offer both the young and old”.

Mrs Spanhake says the Library has been working hard to improve its customer service and has increased the number of new services available to users including email overdue notices and EFTPOS. Your library card also gives you access from home to a range of subscriber-only services for personal use and research such as:

* Encyclopaedia Britannica Online
* Books & Authors
* Oxford Art Online
* Oxford Music Online
* Oxford English Dictionary
* Literature Resource Centre
* Ebsco Reference
* Health & Wellness
* Proquest Science Journals

In the Whakatane and Murupara branches, you can access:

* Ancestry.com
* Fundview and Breakout
* Brookers (law)
