The middle distance courses are in Änggårdsbergen, another recreation area with a number of paths following the north to south running ridges. The area also contains steep slopes, several very steep, and plateau areas with good runnability. The Middle Distance Qualification races held high hopes for most in the New Zealand team and the day ended with a mixture of excitement and disappointment.

The qualification races are competed in three heats with the top twenty competitors heading to the ‘A’ final. The middle distance discipline is the most technical with an emphasis on detailed navigation. Constant concentration is needed with contunial changes in direction and varying speed over the terrain. Middle distance orienteering is the ultimate for technical enthusiasts! Today’s race featured all these exciting components, cumulating in a rugged, steep downhill finish located at the Högsbo shooting range.

Our New Zealand team was once again spearheaded by a consistent performance from Lizzie Ingham who was today joined by Kate Morrison in producing qualifying performances for the ‘A’ final. Thomas Reynolds put in the best male performance, to qualify for the ‘B’ final. The remaining girls are in the ‘B’ final, and guys into the ‘C’ final.

The team emphasis now shifts to the finals racing, held tomorrow.
