Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule has spoken fondly of Mohaka Councillor Deborah Turner, who passed away at Cranford Hospice yesterday surrounded by her family.

"Deborah was simply inspirational. She was highly respected by everyone who knew her, and her boundless energy and complete dedication to her community will be sadly missed."

Cr Turner was first elected to the Hastings District Council in 2001 for the Kaweka Ward. Her passion and concern for the environment were reflected in her efforts in chairing the Omarunui Joint Landfill Committee and organising the Hawke's Bay Environmental Awards.

She was an active member of the Heritage Trails Committee, and chair of the Civic Awards Selection Panel and the Community Grants Committee. She was also passionate about young people and maintained an active interest in the Hastings Youth Council.

Mr Yule said it was "an absolute pleasure" to work with Cr Turner.

"Deborah would always prefer to put her energy into action rather than talk. She had very strong values and her courage in recent months has been very humbling. Despite her ill health, Deborah chaired her last meeting less than two weeks ago."
