Laugesen & Hung Dominate North Island Table Tennis Champs

Auckland’s Shane Laugesen dominated the open section of the North Island Table Tennis Champs held over the weekend at Gillies Ave taking away two of the three titles on offer.
Laugesen, the tournament top seed beat fellow Auckland Simon Wallace in straight games in the semifinals before accounting for Nathan Lowe(Auckland) 11-4,2-11,11-7,11-4,11-7 for the men’s singles title. Laugesen also won the mixed title by teaming with Sophie Shu(Auckland) for a straight game victory against the North Harbour pair of Hanson Ling and Helen Chen.
Laugesen, a Commonwealth Games rep could have won all three titles but was knocked out in the semifinals of the doubles when combining with Liu Chao.
The men’s doubles was eventually won by the Auckland pair of John Cordue and Simon Wallace who beat Lark Brandt(Nelseon) and Yi-Sien Lin(Canterbury) in straight games.
The women’s singles saw Canterbury’s Jenny Hung defeat Shu in a marathon battle 6-11,7-11,11-9,11-8,11-7,11-7 for the title. Hung also won the women’s doubles by teaming up Auckland’s Sally Ho to beat Christine Little(Auckland) and Tetyana Sulimova(Waitemata) 11-7,5-11,11-9,14-16,11-7
