If you live at Akitio beach, near Rotary and Victory Parks in Pahiatua, or Pongaroa and Mangatainoka and maybe at Alfredton or Eketahuna the chances are that kids with rubbish bags will be out and about.

From September 5-12 they will be taking part in Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB) week cleaning up designated areas in their communities.

This will be the fourth time that the district has been involved in the project and this year more than 300 school children from about eight schools are taking part.

Participation includes anyone keen to help - last year numbers grew to 1.3 million people new Zealand wide.

In addition to rubbish collecting Tararua children will have a colouring competition to enter during the week.

There will be prizes for Senior and Junior entries to be awarded later by council staff.

Last year’s winners were from Hopelands/Kumeroa and Akitio schools.

Woodville residents will also out and about in a town spring clean organised by Woodville Districts’ Vision. This is the second time the town has participated.

Council waster manager Jeremy Hirst said he was pleased with this year’s level of participation although he noted that fewer schools had entered.
