Give Dargaville’s centenary celebration an extra realistic touch by dressing in period costume.

“The weekend of the 26, 27 and 28 September offers a great programme of events like the street market which will be even more colourful if people dress up. While the Centennial Ball is a great chance to commemorate earlier times and fashions” says Kaipara Community Development facilitator Heidi Dreyer. “Just choose a fashion from any period during the last 100 years and join in the fun – retro seventies, roaring forties, whatever.”

“And if the moths have got into Grandma and Grandad’s clothes, or they don’t fit, something suitable can be hired from Dargaville Little Theatre.” Little Theatre has a wide range of period clothing for hire and more information on this is available from Mary Clements (telephone 09 439 4823) or Judy Allen (telephone 09 439 4605).

The three day centennial celebration is already attracting lots of interest. It starts with a street market in Victoria Street which will be closed to traffic from 7am on the Friday. In the afternoon businesses and anyone with a sense of fun and adventure are encouraged to enter teams for the Trolley Derby relay which has pride and trophies at stake. This is likely to become an annual fixture. Contact

An additional attraction has been added to Friday’s programme in the form of “Fashion Rocks with Polwarths” at the town hall foyer from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. It is a fundraiser for Dargaville Intermediate School and tickets are available from Polwarth Design.

Tickets for Friday night’s Mark Williams/Dragon concert are selling very fast and both Saturday’s Centennial Ball and Sunday’s Variety Concert are attracting plenty of interest. Ball and Variety Concert tickets are available at The Noise Co.

“Dargaville’s centenary is going to be a really memorable fun event and it only happens once in a hundred years so be sure to be part of it,” Heidi urges.
