Music lovers will have the chance to see Kiwi favourite Anika Moa live in concert on 24 October in a very special ‘one night only’ ASB JazzFest Queenstown performance at Queenstown Memorial Hall.

One of New Zealand’s most accomplished and best-selling artists of this decade, Anika Moa will demonstrate her talent and versatility with the backing of the Frank Gibson Quartet, led by New Zealand’s foremost drummer Frank Gibson.

Festival Director Harvey Maguire says to expect a very special performance.

“People will be able to see Anika Moa in a context they’ve never seen her before. The versatility and depth of her talent is astounding as she crosses music genres effortlessly.

“I saw her perform a set at our launch function in Auckland recently and she blew me away. For her concert in Queenstown we’re creating an intimate jazz club atmosphere so that people can enjoy an up close and personal experience.”

Mr Maguire adds that the calibre of the supporting musicians is outstanding and will make for a great night.

“The Frank Gibson Quartet is the perfect complement to Anika Moa. Frank in particular is renowned in the international jazz community for his wonderful feel, outstanding technique, empathy and versatility across all musical genres. In fact, he’s teaching a drumming master class at the festival which is open to people of all ages and skill levels.”

The concert opens at 7.30pm to the Latino and groove jazz rhythms of jazz fusion exponents 'Subject2change'.

Festival tickets can be purchased online through www.asbjazzfest.co.nz, by calling TicketDirect on 03 450 9110 or 0800 224 224 or at Queenstown i-Site (corner of Shotover and Camp streets).

More about Anika Moa

In 2000, at the age of 19, Christchurch-raised Maori singer/songwriter Anika Moa became the first New Zealander to be signed to an international record label without releasing anything first at home - Atlantic Records flew her to New York to record her pop-influenced debut album “Thinking Room” with highly reputed producer Victor Van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave).

Since then she has released another two albums, the jazz/blues influenced “Stolen Hill” (2005) and “In Swings the Tide” (2007) which has a more country feel.

Anika Moa has collaborated with many artists including New Zealand's SJD and Bic Runga. She has also joined the band Dimmer in a backup and touring capacity, toured twice with Tim Finn and Stellar, and performed support at the request of Dido. She can be seen on the Greenpeace single "Anchor Me", which commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, as a DJ under her pseudonym DJ Unika, or the occasional TV appearance like the Jackie Brown Diaries.

Anika has an unusual guitar playing style - left handed and upside down.
