GISBORNE

While we welcome the long list of international superstars attending Rhythm and Vines in 2008, we recognise that the core of this festival has always been about showcasing the hottest local talent that we have here in Aotearoa.

This year we've pulled out all the stops! Rhythm and Vines is proud to bring you what we see as an all star line up of our New Zealand music greats. With the finest rock'n'roll, dub, reggae, electronic, indie and some genres in between!

Some of the hottest Kiwi acts filling our stages for three days solid this year will be – Shihad (Winner: Best Rock Album for Beautiful Machine and Finalist for Best Group at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards 2008, Finalist for Video Artist of the Year and Best Rock Video for One Will Hear The Other at the Juice TV Awards 2008), The Datsuns, The Black Seeds (Finalist: Best Roots/Electronica for Sling Shot and Telecom Top Video for Cool Me Down at the Juice TV Awards 2008), Anika Moa (Winner: Best Female Solo Artist for In Swings The Tide at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards 2008 and Finalist for Best Solo Video and Telecom Top Video for In My Head at the Juice TV Awards 2008), Katchafire (Finalist: Best Roots/Electronica for Say What you're Thinking and Telecom Top Video for Love Letter at the Juice TV Awards 2008), Recloose (Winner: Best Dance/Electronica Album for Perfect Timing at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards 2008), Ladi 6 (Finalist: Best Solo Video for Walk Right Up at the Juice TV Awards 2008), Little Bushman, P Money, Blackbird, Anna Coddington (Finalist: Best Solo Video for Hold You Here at the Juice TV Awards 2008), Jonny Love (Winner: Best Breakthrough Video for Not the First Not the Last at the Juice TV Awards 2008) and Lydia Cole.

You just can't question 20 years of rock'n'roll power, national anthems, and the tag 'New Zealand's greatest live band'. The truth of the matter is, there is only one Shihad! If you consider yourself a true kiwi you MUST have seen this band live, with songs like 'Home Again', 'My Mind's Sedate' and 'You Again'. These Wellington icons have been whipping crowds into frenzied states since the 80s, and they only get better with age! Their recent performances have knocked the socks of Audiences world wide! Shihad will no doubt be as bigger crowd pleaser as any of the international acts.

Like a high octane fuelled muscle car with a cackling banshee behind the wheel The Datsuns make their Rhythm and Vines debut just in time to play songs from their fourth album "Headstunts" (released Oct 13th). Thrown in with their classics 'In Love', 'MF From Hell' and 'Harmonic Generator'. Event goers will see why this band earned such a massive worldwide following and the title of 'saviours of the new rock revolution' from NME magazine back in 2002. Guitar solos, bone chilling rock'n'roll screams and a thudding rhythm section, will have the Rhythm and Vines crowd going wild!

Which other band could be so closely associated to the sounds of summer?
None other than The Black Seeds! Coming hot off the trail of touring their fourth album "Solid Ground" through New Zealand, Australia and Europe, the Black Seeds will return to Rhythm and Vines for 2008. The explosion of dub, reggae, roots, funk and soul has always been the draw card of this band. The way those summer sounds just drift in through our souls is the perfect reason for them to
keep on coming back for more!

Anika Moa burst into our living rooms and onto our radio waves in 2001 with the amazing debut album "Thinking Room". The country was gob-smacked by the 21 year old with the upside down guitar and a singing voice that stopped you in your tracks. After releasing her third album in 2007 "In Swings The Tide" to double platinum sales, Anika is writing the best music of her life and giving fans something to sink their teeth into! And fans won't just enjoy the music; the off-the-cuff live stand up comedy makes this girl one of our country's most entertaining performers.

The Kiwi contingent doesn't stop there! With New Zealand's premiere reggae brothers Katchafire bringing the horns and the good times; Little Bushman combining soul, rock'n'roll and psychedelic sounds; Ladi 6 and DJ providing masterfully crafted soul by one of this country's most beautiful voices and enchanting lyricists; mastermind producer P Money who makes beats that transcend hip hop, pop and that extra special something; and let's not forget Recloose bringing their unique blend of "Tropical Techno Funk for the Trunk"!

Alongside these NZ musical superstars there is a new breed of New Zealand musicians on the up!

Newcomer singer songwriter Anna Coddington has turned heads this year supporting Anika Moa on a national tour and releasing her charming indie folk debut album "The Lake". R&V local favourites Blackbird will return to layer us in soothing folk with spilling harmonicas and strumming guitars. Jonny Love has spent much of 2008 blasting across the radio with his single 'Not
The First Not The Last', he will make his debut Rhythm and Vines performance much to the delight of fans of new New Zealand pop.

A star in the making, we are so delighted to be graced with the huge talent of Lydia Cole. Lydia's haunting folk songs will etch themselves into your memory.

Plus there are still more New Zealand artists to announce! We'll be sending out more Rhythm and Vines musical updates in the next few weeks.
