Councillor Colleen Brown in officiating at the opening of a new service by the Problem Gambling Foundation stated that it was a sad day and an indictment that Manukau needed such a service but was clear that gambling was causing huge grief in her community.

Councillor Brown and Paulette Goddard, Area Director of Problem Gambling Foundation, both praised the community support for the new service and that ongoing collaboration between the community and local government is a key for eliminating gambling harm.

The opening held at the new service centre at the Manukau Medical Centre, 16 Wiri Station Rd, was attended by sixty people from a wide cross section of the community.

The premises were blessed by Kaumatua from Te Puea Marae, Jim Rauwhero, and Bob Hawke form Orakei Marae.

Hon. George Hawkins stated that as a Cabinet Minister it had been difficult at times getting a balance between those who wished to gamble , and yet trying to ensure gambling was carried out responsibly.

Graeme Ramsey, CEO of PGFNZ stated that PGFNZ would be offering a counseling service as well as a strong public health focus from Manukau. "Manukau City is a national leader in taking practical steps to eliminate gambling harm with the collaboration that exists," says Mr. Ramsey.
