Dumped litter around the council’s red recycling bins is becoming an unwelcome irritation for waste manager Jeremy Hirst.

In stark contrast to the rural communities who take pride in the cleanliness of the bin surrounds, there is less enthusiasm in some of the urban areas.

Dannevirke is the worst offender and the Allardice St car park the worst example, says Mr Hirst.

He is considering the installation of an on site security camera and also encourages the public to record offenders’ car registration and then notify him.

“To see non recyclable items like plastic bags and the contents, plastic bins bulging with rubbish and even an old window just lying around is lazy, untidy and not a good look,” he says.

Mr Hirst plans to minimise the Allardice St problem by adding a second red bin in the carpark. The bin will come from the Dannevirke landfill where it has been under utilised. This will enhance the service although it will not deal with the rubbish problem.

“Maybe a security camera will,” he says.

But he has praise for the rural townships.

“Small communities have taken responsibility for the tidiness because they feel privileged to have the recycling facility. That’s a very different attitude.”
