Waitakere welcome Brazilian playmaker

Waitakere United today welcomes Brazilian import Adriano Pimenta to the country after last week naming the midfielder in their O-League squad. The 25 year old Brazilian playmaker has spent time with FC Thun (Switzerland), Yokohama FC (J League) and more recently Bragantino (Brazil).

 

In confirming the signing, Waitakere Chairman Rex Dawkins expressed delight in the club’s ability to lure a player of Adriano’s class to New Zealand but warned of getting carried away.

 

“We have not made a song and dance about this or any other signing and simply released Adriano’s name amongst our squad earlier this week. Yes, his record is excellent and his pedigree without question, so we are thrilled to have secured such a gifted player, fans are in for a treat this season.

 

“However, he must prove himself in the New Zealand environment and fight for his place in the team just like every other player so it would be foolish to overstate his ability or our expectations. His impact on our team and our campaigns in the NZFC, O-League and FIFA Club World Cup can be significant, but first he must impress the coach and illustrate his commitment to the club.”

 

And Head Coach Chris Milicich agrees entirely with that summation, admitting there is a degree of the unknown when Adriano steps off the plane today.

 

“Obviously we are excited; the boy has played at a high level and scored some crucial goals in Champions League play. But there are a number of hurdles to overcome before we start writing the headlines, let alone put undue pressure on the player.

 

“Communication is one thing, we understand he speaks little or no English and then there is match fitness. But we are looking forward to bringing him up to speed and doing all we can to help him fit in while here.”

 

Adriana has been signed on a short term contract through until Christmas, at which time further assessments will be made on his playing future.

 

One thing is assured though, Adriano’s presence in Japan will be sure to get the local fans on side with the New Zealand and Oceania Champions, following his stints their with Nagoya and Yokohama in the J-League.
