An updated strategy for wilding tree control in the Wakatipu is now available for public comment.

A Wakatipu Wilding Conifer strategy was first adopted in 2004, at which time the council had made a promise to the community that the strategy would be reviewed every four years.

“There has been considerable progress made as a result of the 2004 strategy. We are looking to take that success even further with the revised strategy,” Queenstown lakes District Council parks manager Gordon Bailey said.

“This time round we’ve taken a broader view of wilding trees, recognising species that are now known as potential wilding species,” he said.

The strategy also identified a number of actions to control the spread of wilding tree species and proposed how these actions could be prioritised.

In particular, the strategy proposed an increase in annual funding to $500,000 for the four-year period (previously 100,000 per annum) and that an independent group be set up to actively drive the implementation of the strategy.

“We’re really keen to hear from the community about whether we’ve got the proposed actions and priorities right,” Mr Bailey said.

To help the community understand the strategy, there would be a public information session held from 5-7pm on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the council chambers.

“If you’re interested in the future management of wilding trees, then come along to this session. It will be a great opportunity to share your views and exchange ideas about the future management of wilding trees,” Mr Bailey said.

The strategy and a feedback form was available on the council website www.qldc.govt.nz or the Queenstown council office. Comments close on December 12, 2008.
