Taupo may host two teams during the 2011 Rugby World Cup if a bid made to the event promoters is successful.

Taupo Rugby World Cup Regional Group, comprising Taupo District Council representatives and regional stakeholders, submitted a proposal to Rugby New Zealand to host two teams and have two live coverage sites during the international event which runs from 9 September to 23 October 2011.

The proposal outlines Taupo district’s credentials such as our central location and tourism attributes; the existence of quality sporting facilities venues and excellent accommodation; and our experience in hosting large events.

Taupo Rugby World Cup Regional Group is led by Councillor Mich’eal Downard and includes Mayor Rick Cooper, Deputy Mayor Christine McElwee, Councillor Doreen Blyth and representatives from New Zealand Rugby Union, King Country Rugby Football Union, Taupo Rugby Sub Union, and other interested stakeholders.

Councillor Downard says the quality of local facilities such Owen Delany Park, Crown Park, Taupo Events Centre and AC Baths add strength to the District’s application. He also says the District is positioned well geographically for the event in which teams will be divided into northern, central, southern and national pools.

“Being involved in the Rugby World Cup will leave a legacy for the district’s younger generation in encouraging sport participation. It will also reinforce Taupo District’s position as the events capital of New Zealand,” says Cr Downard.

The proposal has received endorsement from ex-All Blacks Colin Meads and Jim Maniapoto.

Support has also been received from Ngati Tuwharetoa Paramount Chief Dr Tumu te Heuheu who says the District’s involvement in the 2011 Rugby World Cup will build on the community’s history in international rugby. “We are proud of the numerous rugby achievements by members of our tribe and the wider Taupo community, and we look forward to the opportunity to welcome representatives from throughout the world to this event and our district,” says Dr te Heuheu.

The proposal is currently under review at Rugby New Zealand and a decision is expected by mid-2009.
