Dargaville’s new 50 metre pool came closer to reality on Wednesday (November 26) when Kaipara District Council appointed Barfoote Construction as the preferred contractor for the project.

After advertising for expressions of interest in building Northland’s only 50 metre pool four companies, - Barfoote Construction, Hill Construction, Mainzeal Construction and Wooding Construction - were invited to tender as main contractor.

These were chosen for their experience in large construction projects of this type. However, the tender and contract documents require a substantial role for Kaipara sub contractors.

Following the appointment of Barfoote Construction as preferred contractor on Wednesday, Council and Project Manager Mark Bates will negotiate with that company to reach a final price for the project that is affordable and meets the needs and expectations of the community.

Council will also continue to investigate means of raising the additional funding needed to complete the project without costing more in rates than agreed in the Council’s Long Term Community Plan. Possible options include using proceeds from Council’s forestry and the sale of Council property.

The outcomes will be reported to the January Council meeting when it is anticipated that a decision concerning the signing of a formal contract will be made.

Kauri Coast Community Pool Trust Chairman Vern Stevens is pleased at the progress. “Appointing a preferred contractor is an important step and I am confident that Dargaville is going to get a top-class regional facility and a wonderful asset for the local community.”

The proposed complex at Selwyn Park is a 50 metre pool, divided by a moveable bulkhead, plus a hydrotherapy/learners pool.

The Northland Regional Council is supporting the project because of its regional significant and is contributing $700,000 from its Regional Recreational Facilities Fund.
