CHRISTCHURCH

Experienced Hamilton racing driver Kayne Scott took the Fujitsu Ford to pole position as the BNT V8s qualify for their third round at Powerbuilt Tools International Raceway at Ruapuna Park outside Christchurch.

Scott was fastest in each of the three qualifying sessions, employing a minimalist strategy to come out part way through each session for three or four laps, set the time he was striving for, and then go back to the pits to await the next session.

The former V8s champion – and five-time Tranzam champion – pole-winning time was 1:30.135, more than one hundredth of a second under the V8s class lap record of 1:30.267 set by Paul Pedersen in 2005 for the twisty technical Ruapuna circuit. Although the lap record can only be broken during actual races, Scott’s time is indicative of the increasingly intense pace at the front of the BNT V8s field.

With the second quickest time – also under the lap record – is Angus Fogg in the LG Ford, making it an all-Ford front row for the first of three races this weekend for the BNT V8s.

The first Holden lining up for Saturday afternoon’s 12 lap race is the Big Ben Pies Holden of two-time V8s champion Andy Booth in position three while current series leader and defending champion John McIntyre is the fourth quickest in the Talley’s Ford.

The top ten is rounded out by Craig Baird (United Video Ford), Paul Manuell, (Orix Holden), Andy Knight (Milwaukee Ford), Eddie Bell (Metalman Ford), Paul Pedersen (Tigercat Ford) and Tim Edgell in the Chesters Ford.

Race one is scheduled for 4:25pm on Saturday with a 16-lap race at 11:30am on Sunday 30 November and a 20-lap reverse grid race at 4:20pm on Sunday afternoon, all with rolling starts. News and results are posted on the BNT V8s website, www.nzv8s.co.nz, throughout the weekend.
