Council is reviewing the way it manages weed control and has released the policy for public consultation

Taupo District Council undertakes vegetation control including grass, weeds and other pest plants on land it administers, and as part of its statutory requirements, it is looking at the methods of weed control it uses.

A draft weed control policy has been developed which sets out some guidelines including the intention to minimise the use of herbicides wherever and whenever possible.

Community Policy and Planning Manager, John Ridd says that Council is proposing to minimise the use of herbicides as a control measure unless there are no practicable, cost-effective alternative methods. If herbicides are used, the Taupo District Council will also seek to reduce the potential for public exposure by continuing to notify the public that are already in place

Copies of the proposed Weed Management are available from Council offices and on the website. Submissions will close on 30th January 2009.
