The Taupo BMX Club which operates on a section of Crown Park hopes to upgrade its facilities in order to attract national and international events.

The club, whose previous lease agreement recently expired, has been granted permission by Taupo District Council to remain at Crown Park for a further 15 years subject to the outcome of public consultation.

The club currently leases just over one-hectare of Crown Park which is utilised by over 80 members. Should the renewed lease be approved the club intends to upgrade its current facilities to a national standard which would enable it to bid for more prominent BMX competitions.

Part of the upgrade plans include installing a boundary fence around the perimeter of the grounds in order to protect the club from vandalism.

Mayor Rick Cooper supports the club’s plans and believes attracting larger BMX events to Taupo will have economic benefits for the wider community.
