Franklin District Council has, in conjunction with Papakura District Council, launched its new summer road safety campaign, ‘Great Mates Drive Sober’. The campaign will make taking your turn at being the sober driver more rewarding these holidays.

Four Franklin drinking establishments – Smart Bar (Pukekohe), Fireman’s Arms (Pukekohe), Kentish Hotel (Waiuku) and Muddy Waters (Tuakau) - have thrown their support behind the campaign. If you are the designated sober driver between 22 December 2008 and 31 January 2009 simply identify yourself to the bar staff at one of these locations when you arrive, have your hand stamped, and you will get free soft drinks or juice. Before you leave you can also enter your details to win $50 worth of petrol vouchers which will be drawn each week at each establishment.

“We wanted to support and encourage sober drivers this summer and the ‘Great Mates Drive Sober’ campaign is a great way to do this. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 28% of the fatal and serious crashes in Franklin from 2003 – 2007. If you are out with your mates, it’s easy, make sure someone is the designated sober driver before you set out for the night,” says Franklin District Council’s Road Safety Coordinator, Monique Haines.
Papakura District Council is running the ‘Great Mates Drive Sober’ campaign at Murphy’s Law, 2 Fat Cows, Stampede Bar and Thoroughbred.
