The Franklin Sport, Swim and Fitness indoor swimming pool opened again on Tuesday, 27 January. The indoor swimming pool, on Franklin Road, had been closed since just before Christmas to allow maintenance work to occur.

When the pool opened on Tuesday some of the improvements were obvious, especially the complete retile of the bottom of the main pool. The pillars are also sparkling after a new coat of paint and the water slides have been relocated. Safety announcements from pool staff are clearer than ever with a $7,000 speaker system upgrade.

Behind what you can see is a whole system that keeps the pool working and safe and, although you can’t see it, Council took the time to ensure it also benefited from the maintenance closure.

“The closure allowed us to do improvements and maintenance which extend the life of the facility. Things like new electrical boards and waterproof membranes on filter tanks don’t get people excited, but they ensure the pool is taken care of for the benefit of the whole Franklin community,” says Franklin District Council’s Property Unit Manager, Gwyn De Arth.

Although the pool is now open some improvement work is continuing. This work, which includes an upgrade of the lino in the changing rooms, will not have a major effect on swimmers.
