Dargaville’s 50 metre pool project enters an exciting new phase on 9 February 2009 when contractor Barfoote Construction moves onto the site at Selwyn Park.

The first week will involve setting up site services, then excavation for the pool is expected to start the following week. Barfoote Construction is endeavouring to use as many local people on their team as possible.

However, work on the $6 million project is already underway as designing and building pre-cast concrete pool walls and bleachers has been taking place off-site since 14 January. The walls are expected to be ready to be put in place early in April.

“One of the advantages of using pre-cast is that the design can happen off-site while construction work continues, saving both time and money,” says Kauri Coast Community Pool Trust Chairman Vern Stevens who adds that it also allows “some innovative design work” producing patterns on the perimeter walls.

Workers are expected to be on the Selwyn Park site between 7.00am and 5.00pm from Monday to Friday, plus some Saturdays.

The Trust acknowledges that the work may cause some disturbance, including traffic disruptions and possibly noise and light pollution, but says everyone involved is working to keep this to a minimum.

The Trust is writing to residents to advise them of the start of work and what to expect.

“Access only to the construction site will be restricted and activities in other areas of the park should be largely unaffected. However, we ask that park users take care around the construction site at all times,” Mr Stevens says.

In the meantime Kaipara District Council’s Commercial Manager and Community Development Facilitator are actively pursuing avenues to raise the final finance needed for the pool and which has been currently covered by contingency funding from the Council.

“The Trust is very excited to be involved in building Northland’s only 50 metre swimming pool and we are confident it will have recreational, health and economic benefits for all,” Mr Stevens says.

“Seeing the work starting at Selwyn Park will be a big thrill.”
