DANNEVIRKE

As dry conditions continue to grip the district, water management is becoming increasingly urgent for the council’s utilities manager Dave Watson.

In a move to stay within permitted water ‘takes’ a complete hosing ban now applies in Eketahuna, while Dannevirke has moved to the next phase of hand held hosing on alternate days, with the possibility of further restrictions being imposed.
Meanwhile, Mr Watson asks that water conservation/management measures be taken seriously and “would encourage all households to make a long term effort regardless of where they live in the district.”

One simple water saving tip – putting a plug in the sink before washing vegetables could save up to 10 litres of water per minute – depending on the size of the family.
Add two more cooking tips – use just enough water to cover vegetables when boiling and create a compost heap with scraps instead of using the waste disposal unit.
So for those with dishwashers two more tips: don’t rinse dishes before loading them and fill your dishwasher before using it.

To assist residents to find more new water saving techniques, look on the council website www.tararuadc.govt.nz for a readable information packed booklet entitled “Savings In Your House” and published by the New Zealand Water and Wastes Association (NZWWA).
