‘Superheroes’ was the theme of Taupo Library’s Summer Reading Programme which empowered dozens of children to keep reading during the school holidays.

76 local children, aged between four and 13, participated in the nationwide reading programme which required them to report to the library on at least four occasions with their books, partake in activities and complete set tasks.

The new library facility, which was renovated last year, allowed staff for cater to more children than usual. “We worked on a new design so more children could enjoy the programme and be encouraged to keep up their reading levels over the school break,” says Children’s Librarian Kevin Collins.

“The children learnt about famous superheroes and, by discovering the value of completing what they start they, too, felt like superheroes,” says Mr Collins.

As a special treat for those who finished the programme, a party was held at the home of true superheroes – the Taupo Fire Station. The fire-fighters talked to children about the danger of fire, showed them how to spray fire hoses, and let them climb aboard the fire engines after receiving their reading certificates and medals.

“The fire crew were just fantastic, giving up their time to leave an imprint in young minds and hearts. Many thanks to Henry, John and the team,” says Mr Collins. As the party concluded, the fire siren rang and the crew raced away on a real callout giving the children a chance to witness superheroes in action.
