HASTINGS

Almost 50,000 people cooled off at Splash Planet in January alone and visitor numbers are tracking brilliantly for the season.

For the season to the end of January last year 69,221 visitors attended Splash Planet and Year to Date to the end of January this year numbers are up to 82,227 – 13,006 more than the same time last year.

A healthy 47,662 went through the gates in January – 7000 more than the same time last year.

Splash Planet seems to be bucking the national trend.

Approximately half of Splash Planet visitors are from outside the region, with Wellington and Auckland Anniversary weekends showing excellent numbers.

Figures are showing domestic visitor numbers are still steady, with 76 percent of guest nights occupied by domestic travelers.

However, with increasing financial pressure, families are staying for shorter periods at their holiday destinations.

Although the heat wave has helped increase visitor numbers it is not the overriding reason for increases, as temperatures and visitor numbers haven’t necessarily tracked together.

New attractions, such as the toddler’s water play equipment and new kayaks in the Pirate Ship Lake, and the investment in the park’s infrastructure, including increased shade, picnic tables and barbeques have seen families coming back again and again.

These improvements have proved popular and increased customer satisfaction with the facility.

More Hawke’s Bay families than ever before are taking the opportunity to get discounted rates, with 4290 Splash Planet club cards being sold so far this season – more than a thousand more than for the whole of last year.
