A recently resealed section of Omahu Road is being re-shaped and re-sealed after a surveying error meant the resurfacing was not done to specification.

The 4km Omahu Road Corridor Upgrade is being carried out to repair the existing road surface and to manage increasing traffic flows on the northwestern gateway to Hastings.

Higgins Contractors site management recently identified the error, a 500m section between SH50A and Nottingley Road, and Hastings District Council has required remedial work be completed.

Higgins has taken full responsibility for the error and at no cost to ratepayers the new seal will be removed, the road re-shaped and new seal laid.

It is essential the road is completed to Council’s specifications, to ensure effective drainage and good ride quality for vehicles using Omahu Road.

This work is due to start Friday, February 27, at the Stoneycroft Road intersection and is programmed to be completed within three weeks.

Despite the re-work measures the project, from Wilson Road to Pakowhai Road, is still running to schedule and should be completed by the end of June, 2009.

The block from Wilson Road to the Expressway is almost finished.

Higgins branch manager, Joe Tobeck, says additional machinery and labour have been brought on site at no cost to Council to complete the rework and ensure the whole project is not delayed.

“Higgins is going to lengths to ensure impact to Omahu Road properties is reduced and is talking to owners about how to retain access to their property.”

At the start of the project Council set up a retail/business liaison group for the duration of the contract to ensure any concerns were addressed quickly and that group has been informed of the re-work.

“Effects to traffic will be minimal. It will be necessary to close Stoneycroft Street for approximately three days over a weekend period but no diversions will be required on Omahu Road itself,“ Joe says.

Council and Higgins Contractors would like to thank property owners and drivers for their patience and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.
