Two small Waitaki District Council land holdings may go under the hammer if the Council decides to shed the transfer stations at Papakaio and Duntroon.

Enfield, Duntroon and Papakaio transfer stations were closed in July 2007 and the Council had no further use for the sites.

Chair of the property committee, Cr. Peter Twiss, said the Council decided to retain the three sites until the three bin recycling system Request for Proposals (RFP) process had been completed.

“There was a possibility that a contractor might suggest an innovative use for them but we received no such proposals and the Council remains responsible for paying maintenance fees, rates and depreciation costs amounting to $25,900 per year,” he said.

“Duntroon and Papakaio transfer stations could be sold readily but the Enfield transfer station is part of the closed landfill site and the Council would need to retain it as we have consented responsibilities there.”

He said the Council is considering three options: retain all three sites, cease funding depreciation and retain the sites for possible future use, or sell Duntroon and Papakaio and the non-fixed assets at Enfield and cease funding depreciation from 1 July 2007.

It is expected that a decision will be reached at a meeting on 24 March.

The Council is currently consulting on waste minimisation as part of its Draft Waitaki Community Plan until Wednesday, 22 April. More information can be found in the summary of the Draft Plan – the ‘Waitaki Express’, which is now available to all ratepayers and residents.
