The Minister of Maori Affairs Hon Dr Pita Sharples welcomed the release today of the Auditor General’s follow up report on performance audits carried out in 2007.

The original audits covered the implementation of the Mori Language Strategy and Te Puni KMkiri’s administration of grants, and they recommended a number of improvements.

“I am pleased to say that the follow-up report shows considerable improvements have been made, and no new issues have been identified in administration of the grants scheme.

“The follow-up on the Maori Language Strategy (MLS) audit was timed so the Auditor-General’s advice could be taken up in Te Puni Kokiri’s own regular review of the strategy. This will help to ensure that our review gets the best outcome, and enhances our work to support revitalisation of the Mori language”.

Dr Sharples says the audit of the implementation of the Mori Language Strategy (MLS) is especially significant because of the importance of language and culture to Mori identity.

“Te reo Mori is of particular importance to me, as an expression of pride in ourselves and a way to foster Mori identity. Mori success means success as New Zealanders and global citizens, in ways that celebrate our indigeneity.

“Just last night we celebrated Maori Television’s contribution to protecting and promoting Maori language as the birthright of every Maori, and part of the heritage of all New Zealanders.

Dr Sharples expressed his pleasure that Government has such a strong commitment to the revitalisation of te reo Mori.

”I will be taking an active role in shaping this important Government strategy and also encouraging my Ministerial colleagues to do so too.”

The performance audit of Te Puni KMkiri’s administration of grant programmes focussed on the effectiveness and efficiency of processes Te Puni KMkiri used to administer grants between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2006.

The OAG follow-up report states that Te Puni KMkiri’s contract management has improved considerably and the 2007/08 audit identified no new contract management issues.

“This is good news for Mori because Te Puni KMkiri invests significantly to strengthen Mori organisations through its Mori Potential Fund. Ultimately, this is about ensuring Mori success and the achievement of our aspirations.

“Everyone can now have greater confidence in the processes and systems used to make these investments.”
