The tough conditions for competitors in the Rayglass NZ Offshore Powerboat Championship in Whitianga over the weekend are reflected in the tightly-fought championship leader-board.
Rotorua’s Ted Taiatini and Auckland’s Warren Lewis continue to lead the 100-mile championship in ‘Fairview Windows and Doors’ with 2102 points, ahead of Aucklander’s Tony Coleman and Mount Maunganui’s Chris Handley in ‘Cure Kids’ with 1975 points.
In the 60-mile championship, ‘Konica Minolta’ with Auckland crew Greg Brinck and Eldon Archer also continue to hold the lead despite not even racing in Whitianga after a bad broach going out to the start which left the boat and crew damaged. Mike Gerbic and Haydn Mearns, both from Auckland, in ‘Express Engineers’ are just 25 points adrift of ‘Konica Minolta’ with two rounds of the 2009 championship to run.
The Rayglass NZ Offshore Powerboat Championship heads to a new venue based at the Marsden Cove Marina outside Whangarei on 18 April and then the final round on 2 May which will now be held at Gulf Harbour, recently changed from the Auckland Harbour venue.
