As part of the 2009 New Zealand Post Book Awards, Manukau Libraries celebrate the country’s best writers of childrens and young adult stories with a number of events including a scavenger hunt, an author tour, an amazing race and special story times.

The Great Garden Scavenger Hunt is a free, fun, family event at the Auckland Botanic Gardens on Saturday, 16 May. Bring the kids along to hunt for their favourite New Zealand Post book characters. All children will receive a small gift and go into the draw to win some of the finalist books.

To assist with planning on the day, families should register for this event at their local library or via the libraries’ website www.manukau-libraries.govt.nz. Franklin’s Bookinpolis Libraries and Papakura’s Sir Edmund Hillary Library are also taking part in this year’s scavenger hunt.

Teenagers have not been forgotten this year with the inclusion of The Amazing New Zealand Book Race. Just like the TV show, this inaugural event sees individuals or pairs of youth race to complete a set of tasks and locate objects associated with finalist books in the young adult section of the awards. Every one who completes the race within the set time wins a small gift while the first two across the line receives a copy of one of the finalist books.

The events will be held after school over two days on Wednesday, 13 or Thursday, 14 May. Check with your nearest library for the day and time of your local event, or look online at www.manukau-libraries.govt.nz

Another highlight of the festival will be the visit to Te Matariki Clendon, Manurewa and Howick Libraries on Wednesday, 12 May by finalist co-authors Mark Inglis and Sarah Ell. They will talk to local school students about their book ‘High Tech Legs on Everest’.

The authors will also visit the new Mission Heights School in Flat Bush and the Papakura Library to take part in question and answer sessions with students.

Throughout the week 11 to 15 May all Manukau Libraries will celebrate the finalist picture books at their regular story time sessions.
