Salinity of river water has increased during the last few days. The saltiness of the treated drinking water is very high and the Council has been reducing the intake of water into the treatment plant during high tides. This will result in a reduction to the water supply to the Whakatane and Ohope supply area.

Therefore, the Council decided to apply a water restriction with immediate effect to Whakatane and Ohope supply areas until further notice. The consumers of Whakatane and Ohope water supplies are not to use water for gardening or for washing vehicles. The consumers are requested to take all practicable steps to conserve water during the water restriction period.

The Whakatane District Council apologise for the inconvenience caused to the consumers. The Council will lift the water restriction as soon as the situation returns to normal. The residents’ cooperation in this matter will be appreciated by the Council.
