Learn how to save money and sustain the world at the same time.

With the Government clearly indicating that the environment is a priority for 2009, Waitaki District Council is doing its bit to encourage sustainability by supporting the Sustainable Living programme at Waitaki Community Classes, in May.

The Sustainable Living Programme is an independent, community-based adult education and action programme that helps people make informed decisions about their choices affecting the environment.

Maxine Woodhouse the programme facilitator says “the course focuses on practical tips and techniques to reduce your environmental footprint through energy efficiency (reducing power bills), waste reduction, shopping choices, lower carbon transport, alternatives to toxic chemicals, conserving water use, composting and growing organic food.”

Even dedicated ‘greenies’ would find new things to learn, but the typical participant is a busy parent or grandparent who wants to do their bit for the environment and needs to know how. Creating healthier homes and saving money on shopping and power bills are other strong reasons to attend.

This is the first year Council has supported the Sustainable Living Programme, and has provided a grant of $1,500 to enable it to happen in the community. Mayor Alex Familton explains “the time just seemed right for Council to provide some support to the community to help themselves. With pressure on everyone financially, people can learn things from this course that will save them money and help the environment.”
