HAWKE'S BAY

McDonald’s Manawatu Jets forward Ben Hill has announced a mid-season move to Bay Hawks following an approach from the Hawks management at the weekend.

Under the guidance of Bay Hawks coach Shawn Dennis, previously the assistant coach of ANBL side Sydney Spirit, Hill cites career development as the reason behind his move.

“I’m hoping the move to the Bay helps to improve my chances of getting back in to the Tall Blacks squad, as well as playing in Europe again and potentially tying in with Shaun’s contacts in Australia,” says the 29 year old.

The mid-season approach by the Bay Hawks management to sign Hill may be frowned on by many; however McDonald’s Manawatu Jets chairman Rick Pene is philosophical about Hill’s move.

“Ben is a big loss to the Franchise as Tall Blacks are a rare breed in this region. He cut his teeth in our local competition as a school boy and he will be missed, but we completely support his decision", says Pene.

The McDonald’s Manawatu Jets franchise is committed to preparing itself for long term success by continuing to develop young players.

“We must continue to build our franchise by creating and developing potential into ability,” says Pene.

Hill plays his first game for the Bay Hawks on Friday 8th May against the Waikato Pistons.
