Gaining a resource consent to operate a council bore in Pahiatua for 20 years will bring certainty of water supply and is good news for the town, says the council’s manager district assets Stephen Taylor.

Horizons Regional Council’s decision to grant a 20 years consent instead of the 11 years it originally designated was a “great improvement” and was appreciated, he said.
As a next step the council is now waiting for subsidy approval to build a treatment plant and expects to hear by July.

The dual purpose plant will treat the groundwater from the bore as well as surface water from the Mangatainoka river and will improve the quality to meet the Drinking Water Standards, Mr Taylor said.

When subsidy approval is given the new treatment plant could be operational within 8 months.
The council’s quest to find a more certain and better quality water supply by drilling for groundwater began early in 2007.

Mr Taylor said he was confident that the lengthy process Pahiatua residents were experiencing would “be worth the wait.”
