If some Tararua residents are struggling to pay their rates then the council’s revenue team would like to know.

Staff estimates are that only 40% of those eligible have applied for the rates rebate of up to $530.00 per year. More residents took advantage of the subsidy last year, which helps offset their annual rate bill through a government grant.

Revenue manager Eleanor Roberts said the aim in talking with residents was to find solutions.

“Payment methods and amounts can be discussed privately and tailored to meet individual situations,” she says.

Options include direct debit, automatic payment, internet banking, telephone banking, by cash, eftpos or by cheque.

Amounts can be as little as $10 a week spread over the year.

The council was sensitive to the financial stress that can accompany recession and wanted to assist ratepayers to ‘keep on top’ and meet their commitments rather than succumb to future debt compounded by penalties, Ms Roberts said.

“Our door is open.”
