The Napier Hill “lockdown” is drawing to a close with a further reduction in the cordoned area. The section of Chaucer Road South from Spencer Road to Napier Terrace, referred to as “Breakneck” is the only area remaining cordoned off. This will remain cordoned off for the time necessary for the Police to process the crime scene.

The Napier Civil Defence Welfare Centre at Napier Intermediate is now closed and the welfare of those living in the properties on Breakneck is now handed over to the Napier Police in Station Street. Accommodation can still be arranged for those in this area.

This brings the Civil Defence Emergency Operation to a close; however there will be ongoing support for the Police as required.

Angela Reade, Civil Defence Manager, thanks everyone for their support and offers of help.

“It is amazing the generosity of the local community providing support for those affecting by the siege,” Angela Reade says. “This support includes the family and friends of those who responded to the emergency over the last few days. Without family behind us we could not carry out our job of responding to the emergency.”

For further queries, please phone Napier Police on 831 0700.

NOTE FOR MEDIA: Once again Napier Civil Defence would like to thank you for your support during the Napier Hill “Lockdown”. Your efficient and regular broadcasts/reports have been extremely helpful in the operation of our emergency centre as well as the welfare of all those affected.
This is the closing press release.
