TAUPO

Due to an overwhelming response to last weeks open days displaying options for the future of the Taupo CBD, an extra evening session has been booked in on Thursday 4 June.

Around 1,000 people passed through the doors of the Great Lake Centre last Thursday, Friday and Saturday to look at ideas for creating a vibrant town centre including options for commercial and industrial development and designing and re-zoning area’s around the East Taupo Arterial.

“We were rapt with the community’s response to the open days” said Mayor Rick. “From the turnout in the weekend it shows that this community acknowledges the importance of creating a vibrant and appealing heart for Taupo.”

The extra open day is being held from 4.00 – 7.00pm on Thursday 4 June in the foyer of the Great Lake Centre.

The range of plans and options will be on display and Council officers will be on hand to explain the ideas, answer questions and take on board any feedback.

Environmental Services Group Manager Gareth Green says it has been really useful getting a wide range of views and perspectives on the proposed option. “It is great to see so many people passionate about what we are doing. There was a lot of positive feedback on the proposed new laneways and public spaces we are looking at creating and everyone seemed to really appreciate the concept of linking the CBD with the lake and boat harbour.”

“We were also able to inform people about potential parking options and address concerns such as vehicle access to Tongariro and Roberts Streets. With the solutions we are looking at it will be possible to make these streets pedestrian friendly, whilst still allowing access and parking for cars.

There was also a misconception that the events space would be reduced - we will actually be looking at increasing the events space and creating a better connection with Riverside Park,” he said.

“If you didn’t get a chance to attend last week, make sure you book next Thursday in your diary” said Mr Green.
