Based on feedback from dog owners and officers working with dogs on day-to-day basis, Council are proposing some changes to the dog control bylaw and want to hear the public’s view.

At today’s Council meeting the go ahead was given for the proposed changes to the Taupo District Council ‘Control of dog’ bylaw 2004 to go out for public consultation. The bylaw sets standards for dog owners in the district regarding issues such as where dogs are allowed in public places, wandering dogs and nuisances caused by dogs.

There are two changes being proposed which will impact mainly on the Turangi community. The first proposed change will allow dog owners to take their dogs on a leash to the Turangi Town Centre shopping mall, when in the past this has been prohibited. The second proposed change is the introduction of a new dog exercise area between Aonini Road and Wharekaihua Grove in Turangi.

If you have any issues or would like to support the proposed changes, Council encourages you to make a submission. To source the ‘Control of dog’ bylaw, view maps of the proposed areas or to get a submission form go to www.taupo.govt.nz or contact Cherry Hewitt, Senior Compliance Officer on 07 376 0815.

Submissions close 24 July at 5.00pm.
